There is an old saying in the coin collecting hobby, "Buy the book before buying the coin." Your question is a perfect example of why this saying came to be. In order for you to enjoy the hobby and to protect yourself from spending more than you should you need to learn a little bit about the topic that interest you.
A good place to start would be your public library which should have some reference books on world coins. You could check those for basic values and to get a feel for what is out there. The next step would be to find some books that focus on just the area you are interested in and maybe talk to some people who collect in the same areas that you do to get their opinions and ideas.
